Backhaul Alaska Presented with Alpar Community Award for ‘New or Enhanced Recycling’

November 2, 2021

On Tuesday Backhaul Alaska was amongst five other recycling superheroes to receive Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling (ALPAR) awards. Backhaul Alaska was presented with the Community Award for ‘New or Enhanced Recycling’!

We are so excited to receive this award especially right as we are wrapping up another successful year of backhauling, safety training, and local staging infrastructure development. Backhaul Alaska began as a pilot program in 2018 with 10 rural Alaska Native communities and in 2019 we expanded to roughly 16 communities. During this three-year pilot phase, we successfully facilitated the removal of over 273,000lbs. of hazardous material out of rural Alaska.

Thank you to all of our partnering Tribes, supporters, funders, and Alaskans who helped make this happen.

We are looking forward to these Fall/Winter months to spend time preparing for our first official year of Backhaul Alaska Program—stay tuned.
