In February of 2020, the Backhaul Alaska Pilot 2 communities were able meet in person during the annual Alaska Forum on the Environment Conference. Coordinators from 15 Pilot 2 communities participated in the meeting along with their Regional Coordinators. Communities and their Regional coordinators broke out into regional groups to develop work plans and identify next steps for carrying out their upcoming backhaul activities.
Additionally, the Pilot 2 communities were informed that Waste Management will be acting as the “Control Tower” during the Pilot 2 phase. As the Control Tower, Waste Management will manage the shipping logistics on behalf of the Backhaul Alaska Program. Representatives from Waste Management were in attendance and participated in the regional break-out discussions.
